Penelope is much more than the patient paragon of wifely fidelity depicted in Homer’s The Odyssey — rather, think of her as an ancient Greek Desperate Housewife.
Now Penelope speaks to the audience from the afterlife, correcting the commonly held perceptions of her and her story. Her wronged maids beautifully tell their side of the story, through song, dance and storytelling in a stage adaptation by Margaret Atwood of her own wry, witty and wise novel. Audiences will be as enthralled as the ancient Greeks who listened to Homer’s tales by firelight.
